Transforming the World Through Education

Liz Duffy, ISS President

febArticle01.jpg

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of introducing the three opening keynote speakers at the AAIE annual conference in New York City:

•  Award-winning CNN journalist Isha Sesay who has covered countless breaking news events around the world;
•  Homa Tavengar, an acclaimed author and video consultant, who has worked with dozens of schools, corporations, children’s media organizations, and non-profits (including ISS) to foster empathy, inclusion and global competence;
•  Will Richardson, a leading thinker, writer and speaker about the intersection of social online learning networks and education.

The keynote session was held in the iconic General Assembly of the United Nations, a location that was particularly meaningful for me and for ISS. Our founder, Arthur Sweetser, worked at the UN prior to establishing ISS.

Upon his retirement, Sweetser remarked: “You are working for all the ends that make life worthwhile on this planet – for peace, for the eradication of war, for human advancement, for human rights and decencies, for better living standards, better education, better travel and communications – in short, for the world as it ought to be.”

Keith Cincotta, ISS Director of School Services

ISS is committed to children’s safety and well-being. Recently employees in the ISS Princeton office became part of the child protection movement when they completed the Stewards of Children® training offered by Darkness to Light (D2L). D2L, a non-profit organization based in the US, is “committed to empowering adults to prevent child sexual abuse.” ISS will also be offering this training around the world in schools and at conferences in the upcoming year.

Kevin J. Glass, Headmaster, Atlanta International School

Last year students in local, public, private afebArticle02.jpgnd international schools all over the world, took part in a global day of action to help end modern-day slavery. #MyFreedomDay was an incredible success! Students from more than 100 countries participated, reaching more than 160 million Facebook timelines. In addition, there were more than 33,000 tweets and 400,000 Snapchat stories. We were trending on Twitter in several countries.

What was most impressive was the energy and optimism that went into these student-led events. Our young people and our schools around the world really can make a difference in people's lives and in human society. If we stand up to do so. On March 14, 2018, CNN will be asking individuals, projects, schools, cities and countries to participate in a day of action to prevent this 21st century human-rights tragedy.
