The British International School of Brussels

Belgium Grade:
Accreditation: Average Class size: 16 School Type:Private Non-Profit | Day | Coeducational | Curriculum:

School Description:

The British International School of Brussels, established in 2000, enables children to benefit from an enriching and challenging educational programme based on the British National Curriculum. Mutual respect and tolerance are strong themes of the high-quality educational provision for English speaking children aged 3 to 11. The Infant School is housed in a magnificent two-storey building, which provides a very pleasant working environment for both staff and children. The infant building includes 7 large and very attractive classrooms each with interactive whiteboards, laptop computers with broadband Internet connection, an outside playground and facilities for individual music practice, a separate library, and central display area. The Junior School is housed in a slightly larger four storey building including classrooms with interactive whiteboards, junior library, hall and playground. Both buildings also have specialist rooms for Music, Computing and French teaching. All of our full-time teaching staff are university graduates holding qualifications enabling them to have Qualified Teacher Status in the UK and we have an overall child / teacher ratio of less than 10:1. The school is very well located, with its two sites being approximately 3 km east of the city centre, 2km from NATO and 1frac12; km from the European Commission area around Schuman, with excellent public transport links. The small class sizes (current average is less than 16) are a very significant attraction to parents and as the school was founded by parents there is a thriving sense of community. This complements the warm, friendly atmosphere for which the school has rapidly become renowned. The school has about 120 children representing over 30 different nationalities. Over 50% of the children are first language English and we offer a carefully structured programme for children who are not. The ten commonest nationalities represented in school are Belgian, British, Danish, French, German, Greek, Indian, Japanese, Pakistani and Swedish. French is taught as a foreign language throughout the school, with formal lessons starting in the Reception class, and a variety of extra-curricular activities is offered. The academic year has approximately 180 school days divided into three terms between early September and early July. The school day starts at 09.00 and extends until 15.25 although many of the younger children finish at 12.15. To assist working parents we offer a Garderie provision until 18.00 each day. Admission is possible at any time of the school year and requires reports from previous schools and an interview. Each application is carefully considered so that we ensure that entrants can benefit from the educational programme we offer
